"The Spirit's Heavenly Homecoming"
The Rockingham Choral Society presents lesser-known yet monumental choral-orchestral works by Brahms and Beethoven at a pair of concerts April 29thand 30th. Joined by a chamber orchestra of 17 instrumentalists, the choir explores eternal questions through the musical language of these 19th century luminary composers. Johannes Brahms’ secular work, Schicksalslied, returns to his much-loved theme of Destiny and shows the dynamic and emotional potential of choir and orchestra to full effect. We pair this cantata-length work with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Mass in C, a fiery setting too often overlooked in favor of his later Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony. The mass setting utilizes the forces of choir and orchestra along with inventive and exciting vocal solos, sung by members of the Choral Society. As a gentle coda, the performance concludes with the sweetly sad, Elegischer Gesang (Elegy). Our program title “The Spirit’s Heavenly Homecoming” is taken in translation from the end of this text, distilling a poignant hope for comfort in the next life.
